How to "Speak Student": Engaging Students at Every Level
Wednesday August 14, 2024 10:55am - 11:55am EDT

Their interests, dialect, fashion, and hobbies may seem foreign or daunting, but by embracing your student's interests and learning how to "speak student" you too can learn to connect your lessons to the issues they care about most. In this session, you will learn tips and tricks on how to stay on top of trends, slang, and in the know about the things your students care about most, and how to integrate them into your lessons and increase student engagement. Participants should bring a laptop or cellphone to access the internet for this session.

Actionable Strategies for Amplifying Student Voice
Wednesday August 14, 2024 2:20pm - 3:20pm EDT
Research tells us that we cannot expect our students to excel academically unless they feel safe emotionally. As educators are still searching for ways to makeup for lost pandemic time, this session includes actionable strategies focused on student listening and voice as crucial catalysts to both "Maslow and Bloom." After this session, participants will know and be able to implement routines that encourage all students in any classroom to reflect thoughtfully, speak confidently, and listen respectfully. Participants will also consider how building trusting relationships and rapport with students regulates their nervous systems and prepares them for learning. Finally (and perhaps most importantly), attendees will leave curious about other ways to put SEL research into practice across all subject areas/disciplines.
